A stampede during the Maha Kumbh 2025 at Prayagraj has resulted in a tragic loss of life and several injuries. The incident occurred early this morning when millions of devotees gathered for the ‘Amrit Snan’ on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most significant days of the event. The stampede broke out around 1 am near the Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers converge. Devotees, in a rush to escape the crush, stepped over discarded belongings, further adding to the disorder.

Death Toll And Injuries

Reports suggest several fatalities, although official numbers remain unconfirmed. More than 30 people are believed to be injured. What Led To Stampede?

According to Chief Minister Adityanath, the stampede happened when some devotees climbed over barricades at Akhara Marg, the designated route for the Amrit Snan. The crowd pressure in the area led to the tragic event, but authorities have since brought the situation under control. However, the crowd density remains high, with authorities urging caution.

PM Modi And Leaders Express Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, calling it “extremely saddening.” He assured that the local administration in Prayagraj was working to assist the victims. In addition, he offered condolences to the families who lost loved ones and wished the injured a speedy recovery. PM Modi has been in continuous contact with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, to ensure that proper care is provided.

The Maha Kumbh, is held once every 12 years, is the world’s largest religious gathering. It began on January 13 and will conclude on February 26. During this event, pilgrims gather to bathe in the holy waters of the Sangam, believing that it purifies their sins and grants salvation. Nearly 20 crore devotees have already taken the holy dip, with the number expected to rise to 40 crore by the end of the gathering.

Safety Concerns Amid Massive Crowds

The stampede highlights the dangers posed by large crowds at such a massive event. While the tragedy has been managed, authorities continue to urge people to avoid overcrowding in specific areas, especially the Sangam. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath appealed to devotees to take a dip at nearby ghats rather than attempting to reach the Sangam directly. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures at large-scale religious events.
