Assam announces complete lockdown in 3 districts

Assam government announced complete lockdown in three districts—Biswanath, Marigaon and Goalpara and Bokakhat sub-division in Golaghat district for a week from Monday.

North-East: Assam government announced complete lockdown in three districts—Biswanath, Marigaon and Goalpara and Bokakhat sub-division in Golaghat district for a week from Monday. These are those areas from where more than 10 new covid cases have been reported till now in the last seven days.

Providing the statistics of COVID cases, Health minister Keshab Mahanta said that there are another 4,581 cases where the number of new cases reported in the past seven days are less than 10 and these areas will be under strict surveillance.

He added that the inter-district movement will remain in hang and will be more strictly enforced.

The department announced that the situation is coming back to normal where the curfew in Guwahati (Kamrup metropolitan district) was going on. From Monday, the process of unlocking will begin from 4 pm instead of 2 pm now. All shop business establishments and offices will have to shut down by 3 pm.

Similarly, curfew timing in Hailakandi district has also been relaxed and will start from 5 pm. While shops, business establishments and offices will remain shut by 4 pm from Monday.

The ongoing partial lockdown in terms of curfew from 5 pm to 5 am in South Salmar, Majuli, Bongaiaon, Chirang, Udalgur, West Karbi, Anglong, Dima Hasao and Charaideo districts will continue while in the remaining districts curfew will start from 1 pm and all shops, business establishments and offices will have to shut down by 12 noon.

Mahanta further noted that in the meantime, if any, areas report more than 10 new cases, the deputy commissioner concerned can declare total lockdown in that area.

Meanwhile, the vaccination drive launched in Assam is in its full swing and people in large number are inoculating themselves at COVID vaccination centres since morning. But many complained about inconvenience at the vaccination centre due to a large number of people’s gathering.

As the target of inoculation is nearly three lakh, people, every day, a swarm of people was observed at the Centre. Though people are wearing masks rarely people are following social distancing norms.

The situation gets even more intense when your chance to get inoculated comes at the end of the day. This is what Adivasi student leader Joseph Minz faced when he went to the vaccination centre at Doolahat Tea Estate in upper Assam’s Lakhimpur district and waited till noon for his chance. But his all efforts went in vain as he gets inoculated at end of the day.
