Assam: Assam Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, resigned on Friday and is set to join the Bhartiya Janta Party on Monday. He submitted his resignation as a legislator to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

Speaking to journalists before submitting his resignation, the four-time winner of the Mariani seat in Jorhat district stated that the party’s high command in Delhi and Guwahati leaders give priority to elder leaders and failed to listen to their second-tier leaders.

He also adds that there are good chances of Congress to win this time and forging an alliance with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) would be a mistake.

The 43-year-old political leader pointed out that Congress is not eager to listen to its young leaders. This is the only reason why the situation is worsening in all states. Rahul Gandhi is unable to shoulder leadership, if he’s at the helm party won’t move forward, Assam Congress MLA.

Following submitting the resignation, Kurmi told journalists that he was given assurance of post of Leader of Opposition in the assembly but was denied that later. He also applied for the post of the party’s state president but didn’t get that.

The leader who served for one and a half months following his win informed the journalists that the party is not keen to include his name in the list of members for the public accounts committee (PAC) of the state assembly. It seems Congress doesn’t want leaders like him, who belong to a particular community, to rise.

He is not the only leader who left Congress in Assam. Two BJP MLAs, parliamentary affairs minister Pijush Hazarika and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s political secretary Jayanta Malla Baruah had joined the BJP in 2015 along with Sarma.

On the other hand, some reports are saying that Assam Congress president Ripun Bora had expelled Kurmi from the party with immediate effect for his anti-party activities soon after he resigned from the assembly.
