Assam To Phase Out Diesel Buses In Guwahati By 2026
The Assam government has made a significant stride towards sustainability by launching 56 new electric AC buses in Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged off these buses on Wednesday, outlining a plan to phase out diesel buses by 2026.
The move is part of a broader initiative to tackle air pollution and transition towards an eco-friendly transportation system. By 2026, all diesel-powered city buses in Guwahati will be replaced with electric buses. The government plans to introduce over 356 electric buses to the city’s fleet. Under the central government’s PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, an additional 100 electric buses will be added to the fleet, further bolstering efforts to reduce pollution. These buses will not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also offer citizens a more sustainable mode of public transportation.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also highlighted the state’s success in digitizing its transport sector. Assam has secured the top spot in India for the complete digital transformation of its transport services. The shift has minimized the role of middlemen. This will further lead to a 90% reduction in their involvement with the Assam State Transport Corporation.

As part of its efforts to enhance the overall transport system, the state government plans to set up six vehicle fitness centers. These centers will help ensure that vehicles meet safety and regulatory standards. Additionally, new motor driving institutes will be established in every assembly constituency. These institutes will have the authority to issue driving licenses, making the process more accessible and efficient for the public.
The Assam government’s plan to phase out diesel buses by 2026 and expand the electric bus fleet reflects its commitment to a cleaner, greener future. Alongside this, the digitization of the transport sector and the establishment of new driving institutes will further streamline operations, benefiting citizens across the state.
