Assam’s Charaideo Maidams, an ancient burial site of the Ahom Dynasty, has officially been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The momentous certificate was presented to Assam’s Culture Minister, Bimal Bora, in Paris. This recognition marks a significant milestone for the state’s cultural heritage.
A Proud Moment For Assam
The UNESCO World Heritage Certificate of Inscription was handed over by Ernesto Ottone Ramirez, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, during a special ceremony. India’s Ambassador to France, Vishal B. Sharma, also attended the event, making it a memorable occasion for Assam.
Minister Bimal Bora expressed his excitement, calling the recognition a “grand Magh Bihu gift” for Assam. He also took to social media to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their unwavering support in achieving this recognition.

Celebrations From Assam’s Leaders
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his joy by extending his Bhogali Bihu wishes through an official post. He hailed the UNESCO recognition as a major achievement for Assam and expressed optimism about the state’s future. Union Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also congratulated Assam, reinforcing the significance of the moment.
The Charaideo Maidams are the first cultural site from Northeast India to receive such an honor. This recognition was granted at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in India in July 2024. Lastly the Maidams now join the ranks of other prestigious sites like Kaziranga and Manas National Parks in Assam.
The Charaideo Maidams are burial mounds dating back to the Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam from the 13th to the 19th century. These mounds serve as the final resting places for Ahom royalty, known as “Swargadeos,” and other royal family members. Furthermore the site consists of 90 royal burials, making it one of the most well-preserved and significant cultural treasures of Assam.
