Manipur And Northeast Shaken By Earthquakes, Authorities Confirm No Loss of Life
Two earthquakes struck Manipur and Northeast region of India in quick succession, including one of 5.7 magnitude. The tremors were felt across several districts of Manipur and neighboring states. Despite the strong shakes, authorities reported no casualties or significant damage.
The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.7, hit eastern Manipur’s Kamjong district. This area borders Ukhrul, Tengnoupal, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Myanmar. The quake occurred at a depth of 110 km, making it a moderate tremor. It was also felt in neighboring Assam, Meghalaya, and other parts of the Northeast.
Later in the afternoon, a second tremor measuring 4.1 struck the same Kamjong district at 12:20 PM. This one originated at a depth of 66 km. While the quake was milder, it still caused panic among residents in several northeastern states.

These Manipur And Northeast earthquakes were struck on Wednesday were the latest in a series of seismic events in the region. Just a few days before, a mild 3.7 magnitude quake hit western Mizoram’s Mamit district. On February 27, another moderate quake of magnitude 5 jolted Assam’s Morigaon district.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in the Northeast, which is part of the seismically active region of India. The area has experienced several large earthquakes in history, including a massive 8.7 magnitude quake in 1950, which altered the course of the Brahmaputra River. Furthermore other significant tremors include the 1988 quake of magnitude 6.5, which killed over 200 people in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The recent earthquakes caused minor damage to some buildings in Manipur. Videos circulating on social media showed visible cracks in a school building in Wangjing Lamding, Thoubal district. The school was functioning as a relief camp for those displaced by ethnic violence. Officials are currently assessing the extent of the damage. No significant damage has been reported from other areas.
These consecutive tremors have raised concerns over the safety of structures in the region. Authorities have emphasized the need for quake-resistant buildings, especially in Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, and Meghalaya, where frequent tremors are common. Regular awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate the public on how to respond during earthquakes.
The northeastern region of India remains one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world. Moreover, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that residents are informed and prepared for future tremors.
