Education Department Of Meghalaya Takes Strong Stand Against Unapproved School Holidays

The Meghalaya Education Department has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized declaration of school holidays by various educational institutions. In a clear message to schools across the state, the Department stressed the importance of adhering to an approved academic calendar. This is to ensure consistency and accountability in the education system. This firm stance comes as part of the Department’s broader effort to improve the quality of education and streamline school operations.

To lay a strong foundation for the upcoming academic year, the Education Department has introduced a set of well-thought-out guidelines for 2025. The new academic year will officially begin on February 10, with the launch of a Class Readiness Programme. This initiative aims to bridge learning gaps and equip students with essential skills for the year ahead.

The Class Readiness Programme will be divided into two phases. For primary school students, those in Classes I-V. The programme will run until March 7, while for students in middle and high school (Classes VI-X), the programme will conclude by February 28. This early focus on building foundational skills ensures that students enter the academic year well-prepared.

In a significant shift towards greater accountability, the Education Department will now manage examination schedules for Classes VI-IX. This move will ensure uniformity in exam dates across the state. Additionally, schools are required to upload all assessment results to a new digital platform created by the Department. This system will help maintain standardised evaluation practices and provide transparency in student assessments.

Meghalaya’s Education Department Enforces Strict Guidelines To Ensure Consistency Among Students

To further standardise the examination process. The Department of Educational Research and Training (DERT) and the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) will collaborate to develop uniform question papers for all annual exams. This new structure is designed to ensure consistency in how students are evaluated, across all schools in Meghalaya.

The academic calendar for 2025 has been meticulously planned to optimise teaching and learning. For pre-primary students, sessions will conclude by November 28, while for students in Classes I-IX, the academic year will end on December 17. Following this, a winter break will begin, giving students and teachers a well-deserved rest.

In addition to a clear academic timeline, the Department has set specific requirements for teaching days. Primary schools must complete 200 working days, while higher education institutions must have 220 days of teaching. This ensures that students receive adequate instructional hours—800 for primary education and 1,000 for higher education.

In response to concerns raised by the National Achievement Survey (NAS) about student performance. The Department has introduced dedicated learning periods at the beginning of each term. For primary school students, there will be four weeks of focused foundational learning, while higher classes will receive three weeks of concentrated instruction. Also this initiative aims to address existing skill gaps. Further this enhances core competencies, and ultimately boost academic performance across the state.

With these reforms, Meghalaya’s Education Department is setting a clear path towards an organised, transparent, and effective education system for the year 2025.
