The Assam government has taken a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of tea garden workers and their families. The National Health Mission (NHM) Assam has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transform 354 tea garden hospitals into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. This ambitious initiative aims to address the critical healthcare needs of these marginalized communities.
Tea garden workers often face significant health challenges due to limited access to quality healthcare. Issues such as anemia, malnutrition, high maternal and neonatal mortality rates, hypertension, and diabetes are prevalent. Furthermore, infectious diseases like tuberculosis, leprosy, and diarrheal diseases pose significant threats. These challenges are further compounded by inadequate healthcare infrastructure and poor sanitation in many tea garden areas.

The Assam government has been actively working to improve healthcare access in tea estates. This includes initiatives such as Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), the Wage Compensation Scheme for pregnant women, and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with tea estate hospitals. Free medicines and patient transport services are also provided, along with the development of new hospitals under the Assam Tea Corporation Limited.
