One out of four Indians are infected with Coronavirus, claims a study conducted by Thyrocare. The research took reports of 270,000 antibody tests and suggested the future looks grim in India. As per the lab head, the number of Covid-19 positive cases are much higher than shown by the government officials which is an agonizing sign.
Dr A Velumani said an analysis of 270,000 antibody tests conducted by Thyrocare across India showed the presence of antibodies in an average of 26% of the people, indicating they had already been exposed to Coronavirus. “This is a much higher percentage than we had expected. The presence of antibodies is uniform across all age groups, including children,” Velumani told Reuters.
Thyrocare’s findings are in line with the government surveys done in Indian cities such as Mumbai, which showed that 57 per cent of the population in its crowded slum areas had been exposed to the virus.

The Thyrocare survey covers paid and tested patients, covering 600 cities in India for the last seven weeks. Velumani further added, ”If the current trend continues, the percentage of India’s population having antibodies may reach 40% before the end of December,” which is indeed a worrying sign as hospitals across the country are already overcrowded with patients and the medical staff are not able to cope up with the increasing rise.
India currently has a total of 2.8 million cases, third only behind Brazil and the United States globally, but active patients are less than a fourth of its total caseload, according to health ministry figures. Looking at the toll of Covid-19 cases, 69,652 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours and total active cases are 6,86,395 recorded by today morning. Trail on the second phase of ‘COVAXIN’ will shortly be conducted in Guwahati Medical College.
