Assam CM:  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 11 requested the Muslims to adopt decent family planning in order to bring down poverty and social problems. He also hoped that the community would come together to respect the government’s stand.

He addressed a press conference to mark the completion of the first month of his government.

On being repetitively questioned regarding encroachers of land, Sarma urged the organisations like the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) and the opposition party, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) to work towards population control.

He also pointed out that he is not against any community or section and that he wants to focus on the development of everyone.

Sarma noted that the reason behind encroachment is an increase in population and if it will continue, it will lead to a paucity of living spaces. It will also result in conflict.

He added that some people are not in the favour of eviction drives. But they can’t allow people to illegally settle on forest land or land belonging to temples.

In the year 2017, the Assam assembly passed a ‘population and women empowerment policy. According to this policy, people are not allowed to have more than two children to secure government jobs. Also prevented such persons from contesting Panchayat and municipal elections. The policy is yet to be implemented.

He elaborated on the illegal smuggling of cattle and termed it as a big problem. He said that in the next Assembly election, the government will pass a law, to make the transit of cattle through the state illegal.

With the imposition of this new law, Assam will be able to fight this menace. In the interim, they had stopped the movement of cattle through an executive order.

He also added that ever since they’ve come to power, they had almost put an end to this illegal trade.
