Assam has recorded a 96.67 per cent rise in COVID-19 infection among children and teenagers below 18 years from the first wave till the second wave of the pandemic.

Assam: With the growing number of new COVID cases, Assam, the northeast state is also not far behind in recording alarming numbers. It’s been over a year since the pandemic has created wreak havoc. Not only our busy life has taken a backseat, but our tasks at hand have also been largely affected. The situation is the same across India. Assam is also telling the same tale of depressing numbers. But the condition is more perilous for toddlers. Till now, Assam has recorded a 96.67 per cent rise in COVID-19 infection among children and teenagers below 18 years from the first wave till the second wave of the pandemic. Even though the state has seen only a 27.31 per cent rise in the total number of cases.
Not just that, the state has also witnessed over three times increase in deaths of the below 18 year age group. Of which 55 per cent are toddlers – 0 to 5 years age group.
Delta Plus variant has even more complicated all theories behind the spread of COVID 19. It is increasingly spreading. After being detected in three states, the statistics have shown that this is one of the reason behind a possible third wave. According to experts, it may infect children more than the Delta variant that has been found in the second wave.

Despite assurances of vaccinations that it will provide relief, the presence of the Delta Virus is undeniable. Earlier Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that the samples sent for analysis between April and May, 77 per cent had the presence of the Delta variant.
The numbers are posing a serious, alarming situation for the children. According to statistics released by the National Health Mission (NHM) in Assam, the number of coronavirus-infected between the age group of 0-18 years was 17,457 in the first wave, which has increased to 34,333.
The statistics consist 3,014 toddlers and 14,443 minors and teenagers between 6-18 years old in the first wave (March 31, 2020, when the first case was reported, to March 2021). This number has been increased to 5,778 toddlers and 28,555 of the rest below 18 in the ongoing second wave (April 1 to the available data on June 25).
This means, there is a 91.70 per cent spike in the infection of toddlers and a 97.71 per cent spike among those between 6-18-year-olds.
Only three toddlers passed away in the first wave, the second wave took 19 lives. This is over six times increase. Of those between the 6-18 age group, it went from six deaths in the first wave to 15 in the second, a two times rise.
