Manipur Tops Northeast In MSME Registrations

Manipur has emerged as a leader in the northeastern region for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) registrations. According to the 2018-19 Annual Report of the Ministry of MSME, the state registered 12,438 MSME businesses between 2015 and 2019, the highest in the entire northeast.

One of the standout features of this growth is the significant role played by women. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh highlighted that women own 50% of these businesses. This reflects a thriving entrepreneurial spirit among women in the state. The rising number of women entrepreneurs demonstrates the changing economic landscape in Manipur.

Despite being home to only 0.2% of India’s population, Manipur contributes 0.3% to the country’s MSME sector. This accomplishment showcases the resilience and entrepreneurial zeal of the state’s people, who continue to drive its economic progress.

Focus On Financial Empowerment

CM Singh spoke at a state-level workshop on the UNNATI and RAMP schemes, where he emphasized the importance of financial empowerment for families. The state’s ‘One Family One Livelihood’ mission is designed to provide financial assistance to establish businesses. The initiative offers collateral-free loans up to Rs 10,00,000 with a 30% grant component, promoting self-reliance across the state.

Singh also mentioned the Manipur State Credit Guarantee Scheme, which has already benefited about 2,575 entrepreneurs. This initiative helps in securing loans without requiring collateral, enabling entrepreneurs to access capital more easily.

Start-Up Ecosystem Driving Employment

Manipur’s start-up ecosystem is also thriving. Seven successful start-ups in the state have provided employment opportunities for approximately 300 internally displaced persons (IDPs), showing the positive impact of the entrepreneurial drive in the region.

Encouraging Timely Loan Repayment

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of timely loan disbursement by banks. He also urged borrowers to ensure prompt repayment of loans, emphasizing that it is vital for maintaining access to future credit opportunities. This responsible financial behavior is key to sustaining the momentum of Manipur’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Manipur’s growth in MSME registrations, particularly among women entrepreneurs, highlights the state’s thriving business environment. With robust schemes aimed at empowering families and promoting self-reliance, the state is set to continue its economic ascent. The ongoing focus on financial inclusion, coupled with support for start-ups, ensures that Manipur remains a beacon of entrepreneurial success in the northeast.
